Community History

We represent the local eucharistic community of the Greek Orthodox Church in its specific locality. Our aims and purposes are to proclaim the Orthodox Faith and to promote Hellenic culture and civilization. We do so by conducting Church services and sacraments, by providing supplementary educational services, by organizing youth activities and social events, by engaging in charitable works for the alleviation of poverty, and by providing other community services for the benefit of the local Greek Canadian community.

Brief History

1966 – A group of 100 Montreal residents of Hellenic descent proposed to build a new church in the Ahuntsic-Cartierville area. Many in the group were English-speaking and first-generation born in Montreal, who aimed to establish what they referred to as «Our Very Own» parish.

1967 – They petitioned the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America to form what became commonly known as St. Michael’s Parish in memory of their popular Greek schoolteacher, Michael Stavrides, of Montreal.

1969 (January) – Land was purchased on Élie-Blanchard Avenue in Cartierville to start the construction of the “The Greek Othodox Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel”.

1974 – A group of parents organized and founded the Saturday Greek School of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

Since its inception our community has grown significantly. It continues to strive to bear more effective witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as expressed in the apostolic tradition and worship of the Greek Orthodox church. We invite you to also participate in this witness by joining the worship and fellowship of our parish.
